The Gourd Tree

The Gourd Tree

I made a tripod of cut saplings to hold up my gourds and moonflowers. I need to get out there at dusk and get a picture of them. They are night-blooming and glow with ethereal white blossoms in the dark.

These are birdhouse gourds. I'll dry them and make...well...birdhouses and dippers and stuff. I like to paint and carve them. I like to break them apart and put them back together in interesting ways. I used to buy other peoples gourds but I like having control over the mold patterns on them. Other people try to keep their gourds too clean. If you let the mold do it's own thing while they are curing...they are much more interesting. Growing your own also means that you have the wonderful woody stems which have many uses.

Gourd leaves are the softest things. They feel like bath tissues, they are so soft. I've never felt anything in nature quite like them.

If I were little, I think I would enjoy hiding in there.
