Wasp Trap

Wasp Trap

File this in the gross but oddly satisfying category.

This year has been a really bad one for angry stinging insects. Shadow has all but given up on going outside. We've all been stung repeatedly. Mostly by paper wasps and yellow jackets.

An unwelcome new arrival is a humongous hornet. I know it must be a European Hornet but it's twice as big. It behaves much like the European Hornet, flying at night and being attracted to lights, but it's just so huge. The head is enormous and yellow and it has no fur. The stinger is a quarter of an inch long. I don't even want to imagine what that feels like.

So the wasp traps went up and the hummingbird feeders came down. My hummers are sort of pissed, but I'm catching hundreds of yellow jackets, hornets and paper wasps daily. I fill the traps with a solution of sugar, water and a little yeast.

A quarter of an inch? I feel faint just thinking about it. Insects are cool but oogy.
